Profiles in Prevention: Will Francis
Will Francis, LMSW
Government Relations Director,
National Association of Social Workers/Texas Chapter
Why is this issue important to you?
Texas must ensure that all children grow up in safe, supportive and loving homes, and the Texas Legislature has the unique opportunity to transform lives by focusing on our state’s child welfare needs. Advocating for children is a foundation of social work, and I believe that through smart funding and policy we can all work towards eliminating child abuse in Texas.
What prompted you to get involved?
As a former CPS caseworker I saw firsthand both the limitations inherent in the system, as well as the possibility for meaningful change. I’ve used that perspective to advocate for children on the state level, and want to ensure that our efforts are always aimed at supporting the best interests of all children.
How does your role as a Child Protection Roundtable Member impact child abuse prevention?
I advocate and testify at the Capitol throughout the session and work closely with DFPS to offer my knowledge and support. I think that the key to keeping kids out of CPS is to provide more resources for prevention in our communities. If we help families before they reach crisis mode, we keep kids out of substitute care and in their homes.
How would you encourage others to make an impact?
Get involved by volunteering. Either through CASA, the Boys and Girls Club or another mentoring program, the youth in our foster care system need consistent and supportive adults in their lives. You can really make a difference if you just take the time to get to know these kids and help them on their journey through life.
