Austin, Texas — Today, House Bill 1549 (the Child Protection Act) passed the Texas Senate with a unanimous 31-0 vote. Madeline McClure, CEO of TexProtects, the Texas Association for the Protection of Children, issued this statement upon its passage:

“We are thrilled to see Rep. Cindy Burkett’s House Bill 1549 pass the Texas Senate unanimously. Thanks to Senator Lois Kolkhorst for guiding it swiftly through the upper chamber.

“Too many Texas children suffer and die due to abuse and neglect every year. Most child maltreatment can be avoided, either through prevention programs or improved staffing at Child Protective Services. Through its combination of strategic planning to increase the reach of prevention and early intervention services, better usage of data to geographically target those services, and improved management of caseloads and trauma supports for CPS staff, HB 1549 will result in safer children and stronger families in Texas. We hope both chambers can quickly resolve the differences in their respective versions so that Governor Abbott may sign this bill into law.”
