OP-ED: Texas must value the true costs of childhood trauma

TexProtects has been working closely with Rep. Tan Parker of Flower Mound on bills to prevent and mitigate the effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences. On April 18, Rep. Parker had an op-ed published in the Houston Chronicle detailing the importance of establishing a statewide, cross-systems strategy to accomplish this with his House Bill 4183. (This op-ed also ran in the Galveston County Daily News)

"What’s wrong with you?”

That’s a common question we ask when children act in a self-destructive manner. Maybe they’re being disruptive in class, misbehaving regularly, hurting themselves or even having violent thoughts.

A growing body of research suggests that “What’s wrong with you?” is actually the incorrect question. The better one is: “What happened to you?”
