Dallas, Texas — Earlier today, Hank Whitman announced that he will be resigning as commissioner of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, effective at the end of June. Sophie Phillips, CEO of TexProtects, the Texas chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America, released the following statement regarding his tenure:

TexProtects extends its thanks to Hank Whitman for his service to the children and families of Texas. There is possibly no job in the service of our state more challenging than the one he now leaves behind, and certainly, challenges still remain for DFPS. But Whitman kept an open door and open ear to advocates for children and welcomed our input. Badly needed measures to reduce employee turnover – principally, pay raises and increased staffing levels – came to fruition under his leadership. That is a legacy that will leave a positive impact on child safety for years to come.
