How did child well being issues fare at the 86th Texas Legislature? Read our end-of-session report

The 86th Texas Legislative Session ended on May 27, 2019, and TexProtects' staff worked tirelessly to advocate for Texas children and families.

So how did Texas children – and specifically, the legislation affecting their well-being – fare at the Capitol? You can find out now by reading our end-of-session wrap-up report (click that link to see an easy-to-print PDF).

From the beginning of the session (which began January 8), TexProtects laid out a robust public policy agenda, consistent with priority areas across the child protection continuum including:

  • Investment in evidence-based prevention and early intervention programs such as Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) and Project HOPES

  • Investment in a full continuum of high-quality foster care services

  • Support for older youth aging out of the foster care system as they transition into adulthood including pregnant and parenting youth

  • Support for the integration of trauma-informed care into service delivery systems

  • Access to health care to improve maternal and child health including mental health and substance use prevention and treatment

  • Cross-sector collaboration to improve state-level efficiency and community access to funding and programs

We hope you'll find this report engaging, informative and useful as you educate both yourself and others about the epidemic of child abuse and neglect in Texas, and what we – that means you – can do about it. This report was made possible by your support, both in donations of money and tireless engagement with your community and lawmakers.
